Probably the 'holy grail' of online marketing – great search results result in essentially free traffic, it's usually targeted and results in good conversion (you're all tracking conversions right?)

However it's often made out to be a black art and it really isn't – it's actually quite a straight forward process. A successful optimisation campaign can be divided into 3 parts:

  • Optimised copywriting and meta data
  • Link building

1 – Keyword research and analysis

This should be the first part of any search engine optimisation campaign. Finding out what keyphrases have the greatest volume and then weighing that up against how heavily they are being optimised for by other company's forms the foundation for which keyphrases you target.

Some keyphrases can be so heavily optimised (or have been dominated for a long time) that to gain any result at all would either cost too much money (buying links) or take too much time! However for the majority of small businesses, the keyphrases or geographical areas are such that top 5 results can be achieved.

2 – Optimised copywriting and meta data

This is generally the hardest part to get correct. Good copy needs to balance keyphrase density and positioning, as well as it being grammatically correct and making sense to the reader. It's all very well having perfectly optimised text but if it reads like garbage to the user, they'll just hit the back button and find another site to view!

Meta data refers to the title tag, meta keywords and meta description. Modern search engines no longer place emphasis on the meta keywords (they’re too easy to manipulate) but still use the meta title and meta description as part of their ranking algorithm.

3 – Link building

There are several types of links – links from your site to others (outbound links), links from other sites to yours (inbound links) and links within your site (internal links).

All of them play a part in search engine optimisation however it's key that your site has lots of inbound links.
